Crocheted Tetraflexagon

Materials and Methods: Crocheted from Mirasol Sawya
Designer & Artist: Carolyn Yackel
Year: 2013

This is a working crocheted square-shaped flexagon comprised of eight smaller squares. In fact, each small square is made from two separately crocheted lacy granny squares from Edie Eckman's book Crochet Motifs; the inside and outside colors are reversed on front and back and the two granny squares are stitched together around the perimeter. The eight squares are arranged to form the lightning bolt tetraflexagon and then pasted (crocheted) together to form the complete tetraflexagon represented in Figure 6.1 of Flexagons Inside Out, by Les Pook. While it has been claimed that the actions on the lightning bolt flexagon form the group Z4, J. Beier and the artist show in "Groups Associated to Tetraflexagons" (under review) that that the group of actions is isomorphic to (Z8 semidirect Z2 ) x Z2, or D8 x Z2.
