Cyber Rose

Materials and Methods: Bobbin Lace
Designer & Artist: Veronika Irvine
Year: 2013

The center motif in this piece contains traditional stitches, known as cloth and rose ground, commonly found in Torchon bobbin lace. The surrounding three regions display stitches discovered by the artist using a combinatorial algorithm. In the algorithm, properties of bobbin lace that are required to make workable, continuous and connected lace are represented as mathematical relationships which are then used in a backtracking algorithm to identify patterns that meet these criteria. This piece demonstrates the ability of the computer generated stitches to integrate with each other and with traditional stitches. The work is part of the artist's on-going work in using math to explore new directions for the fiber art of bobbin lace.
