Curvy Coasters

Materials and Methods: Crocheted with size 10 crochet thread
Designer & Artist: Jake Wildstrom

Each of the coasters in this pair is a small square showing a third order Moore curve in black on a white background. The Moore curve is a space-filling curve, which is here depicted on a grid using the interlocking crochet technique developed independently by Tara Gulik and Kyle Calderhead. (The white background forms two trees.) Because every lattice point of the grid has the curve entering and exiting along exactly two of the four cardinal directions, and because the gridlines not appearing on the front appear on the reverse, the design on the back also depicts curves entering and exiting each lattice point in two directions. However, unlike the Moore curve, this pattern consists of many closed curves.
