Title: SOLS(10)
Artist and Designer: Janet Dalzell
Materials: Acrylic yarn
Technique: Crochet
Artist’s Statement: A pair of latin squares is orthogonal if,
when superimposed one over the other, all ordered pairs of the elements of
the squares are generated. I found that the nature of traditional crocheted
granny squares were perfect for representing an ordered pair, with one piece
of the pair being the inside color, and the other the outside color. Using
a square that, when transposed, was orthogonal to itself (a self-orthogonal
latin square) gave a solid-colored diagonal.
