Susan Goldstine's Perfectly Simple

Title: Perfectly Simple
Artist and Designer: Susan Goldstine
Materials: Debbie Bliss baby-weight cashmerino yarn
Technique: Crochet
Artist’s Statement: A squared rectangle–that is, a rectangle tiled by squares–is simple if it contains no smaller squared rectangles and perfect if no two squares are the same size. This piece is a crochet representation of the smallest simple perfect squared rectangle. It was inspired by Kathy Merrick’s Babette Blanket pattern, which makes a squared rectangle that is neither simple nor perfect but does feature squares of many different sizes.
Perfectly Simple features a 32 x 33 rectangle divided into nine squares of side lengths 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, and 18. The size of each square is the number of striped bands within the square.
