That doorway on the left leads to the upstairs living room. The area behind the medusa-lamp is used for paper storage and books on knitting, origami, and the like.
The loft, with picture window and Shark
We generally refer to this area as "the loft." It was originally a painter's studio ---an addition to the house in the 20th century, built above the sculptor's studio which is currently used as a mudroom. That amazing picture window faces West. As you can imagine, the cats like to hang out in front of it.
View from loft window
Here's a typical view out the loft window. There seems to be an old truck cab cover in the woods.

This is what the room looked like before we moved in. (The view is identical to that in the photo directly above.)

And we're back to Shark
And, we're back to Shark rolling about in front of the loft window. It's really a lovely place to be in the afternoon. Interestingly, this room is not heated. You can see a baseboard heater in the previous photo, but apparently it doesn't kick out a significant amount of heat. Once we saw a pretty bluegrey-and-white woodpecker outside the window.

The bookshelf came with the house, and fits perfectly under the sloping ceiling
This is sarah-marie's office. (Note keys to XU office on the front left corner of the desk. The desk came with the house, but had to be deconstructed in order to be moved into this room.) The bookshelf came with the house---actually, it was in the attic, and we'd wanted to put it in the living room in front of the fireplace but it wouldn't clear the stairs. How can this be, you ask? It had to get upstairs somehow... Well, the stairs have been reinforced over the years, so they're about an inch higher than they were originally... and that's just about the amount of room we'd have needed to bring the bookshelf downstairs. It fits perfectly under the sloping ceiling here, so everything worked out well.
The sewing area
This is the sewing area (not quite unpacked yet). The paneling between the sewing desk and the cutting table is made of old courthouse doors.
