Virahanka's Thoughts Overflow

Designer and Artist: Susan Goldstine
Materials and Methods: Two-color brioche knitting with Berroco Remix Light yarn, copper wire
Year of Creation: 2021

A standard increase in two-color brioche knitting makes a line of main-color stitches split into two branches. In Virahanka's Thoughts Overflow, the branches follow a simple recursive pattern that makes the number of main-color stripes at each level follow the Fibonacci sequence. The fact that the Fibonacci numbers grow asymptotically exponentially gives the piece its flared shape.

Virahanka is an Indian poet and prosodist who wrote about the Fibonacci sequence in the context of Sanskrit poetry many centuries before Fibonacci was born.
