Title: Simple Sample Sierpinski
Artist and Designer: Ted Ashton
Materials: Tatting thread
Technique: Shuttle Tatting
Artist’s Statement: The Sierpinski Triangle can be created
in numerous ways. One method is to “grow” it, as one would grow a crystal,
by taking some seed (in this case, a single tatted circle), making two copies
of it and connecting them to form a triangle, then repeating the process, each
time using the existing triangle as the seed. I’ve long been interested in
mathematics whose beauty can be enjoyed by the non-mathematician. This piece
was inspired by Jake Wildstrom’s talk at the 2005
Fiber Arts special session,
but was designed and created as a gift for my wife, who has a special love
for triangles.
