One end of Laura Taalman's Pi Scarf

Title: Pi Scarf
Artist and Designer: Laura Taalman
Materials: Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece Yarn (80% cotton, 20% merino wool), in Pink-A-Boo and Victorian Pink
Technique: This scarf is double-knit on straight needles so that each stripe is one color on one side of the scarf and the opposite color on the reverse side.
Artist’s Statement: Although simple, the Pi Scarf illustrates a two-way street between mathematics and art. Mathematics informs the design of the scarf by providing a simple way to have a non-repetitive pattern. On the other hand, the design informs mathematics by allowing one to “see” the digits of Pi and visually appreciate their non-repetitive nature. There is something nice about knowing that the stripe widths seem random but in fact are completely determined. The Pi Scarf can never be completed, as there will always be infinitely more digits of Pi to knit.
