Mary Shepherd's Two Color Symmetries--I
Title: Two Color Symmetries—I
Artist and Designer: Mary D. Shepherd
Materials: 16 count Aida fabric and DMC floss
Technique: Counted cross stitch
Artist’s Statement: This piece, designed during the summer of 2008, demonstrates the possible two-color symmetry patterns for four of the wallpaper symmetry groups. It is loosely based on a quilt block design called Drunkard’s Path, a quarter circle in one corner of a square. You can see this motif in the upper left corner of each larger square. The squares in each basic color (red, blue, yellow and green) are based on one symmetry pattern. The red squares show p1, where the only symmetries are translations in the two directions. The red square next to it shows the two-color pattern p1/p1, where the notation indicates that the subgroup that preserves the motif coloring is also p1. The blue squares demonstrate cm symmetry group and cm/pm, cm/pg and cm/p1 two-color symmetry groups. The yellow squares demonstrate p2 symmetry group and p2/p2 and p2/p1 two-color symmetry groups. The green squares demonstrate the pgg symmetry group along with pgg/p2 and pgg/pg two-color symmetry groups.
